Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Pirates hit a cold shooting day
and dropped their second game of the season, 91-76 to a hot
Illinois Wesleyan team. Southwestern shot just 36% from three point
range for the game while IWU was 59% from long range including a
perfect 6-6 in the second half.
Southwestern came out of the gates quick and mounted a four point
lead before Illinois Wesleyan jumped to action and went on a 16-2
run to go up by 10, 16-6, with 14 and a half minutes to play in the
first half.
The Pirates hung close, however, and put together a 12-1 run to
pull within three points, 29-32, with a little over five minutes
remaining in the period. IWU's Zimmer drained two threes
within thirty seconds of each other to push the lead back up to
ten, 29-39, just one minute later.
A quick sprint to halftime had the Pirates within four, 42-38,
heading into the break and two minutes into the second frame SU
tied the game up 46-46.
Southwestern remained within striking distance until IWU broke it
open with six minutes remaining and cruised to the 16 point
win.
Senior's Travis Barber and Zach Bergstrom led the way for
Southwestern with 17 and 16 points respectively. Junior Nick Caputo
chipped in 11 points in the loss. IWU's Zimmer had a game
high 35 points.
Barber and senior A.C. Cox were named to the All-Tournament team
for their consistent play over the two game stretch.
With the loss Southwestern falls to 8-2 on the season. They will
return home this coming weekend and return to SCAC conference
action on Saturday, January 2nd against Colorado College at 3:00pm.
