Biography

2014

Downing closed his collegiate career with a massive season, leading the Pirates in goals with 34 and being named the SCAC Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-SCAC, a first in Southwestern Lacrosse history. Downing also had seven assists for 41 points and scored a team-high six man-up goals. He also collected 24 ground balls and forced five turnovers. His .622 shots on goal percentage was among the best for SU. Downing was the SCAC Offensive Player of the Week a staggering three times this season. Downing had his best game against Centenary on April 19th, scoring five goals and assisting on two others for seven points. He matched his five goal output earlier in the month as he scored five against Franciscan on April 4th. Downing closes his career as the record holder for most shots in a game (17), shots in a career (306), faceoffs won in a game (12), and career faceoffs won (14). He was also a member of the SCAC Academic Honor Roll.

Downing was third on the team in goals (22) and fourth in points (25). He also recorded three assists and took 67 shots with 47 being on goal for a team high 70.1 shots on goal percentage. Downing went 8-18 in faceoffs for a .444 faceoff percentage. Downing currently holds the records for shots in a game (17), faceoffs won in a game (12) and career (141) and season faceoff percentage (.481). He earned an Honorable Mention All-SCAC selection. 

2012 (Sophomore)

Downing led the Pirates in faceoffs, winning 64-133. He was second on the team in goals with 23 and added 10 assists for 27 total points.

2011 (First-year)

Downing split faceoff duty in his first season with the Pirates and was a strong offensive presence on the field. He was fourth on the team in goals (18) and points (24) and won 69-166 faceoffs this season.

High School

Tyler, a 2010 graduate of McNeil High School, was named to both the All State and All District teams as a midfielder for the Mavericks. 

Personal

Tyler is the son of Patrick and Sharon and has one sister, Sarah.  Tyler is a psychology major with a minor in philosophy at SU.
