WSOC Concludes Abilene Trip with Loss to Hardin-Simmons

ABILENE, Texas – The Southwestern University Women's Soccer team lost just its second game of the season on Saturday, as the Pirates wrapped up their west Texas road trip with a 5-0 loss to Hardin-Simmons University at the HSU Soccer Complex. SU moves to 3-2-2 after the loss.  
 
The Cowgirls scored twice in the opening five minutes, with goals in the second and fourth minute to grab the early advantage. Hardin-Simmons added another goal in the 22nd minute to take a 3-0 lead into halftime. HSU added five more shot attempts between gaining their 3-0 lead and the half, with two being saved by EJ Searfoss.
 
The Cowgirls added two more goals in the second half to secure the shutout with one coming six minutes into the half and the other coming with 12 minutes remaining. Southwestern was held to six shots in the match, with five coming in the first half of play. The Cowgirls only allowed one SU shot in the final 45 minutes of play. HSU tallied 29 shots with 14 on goal.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Matti Penders played all 90 minutes for the Pirates and has done so in six of seven games this season.
  • Kristine Garcia led Southwestern with two shot attempts.

The Pirates return to Varsity Field Friday, Sept. 25, for a 7:00 p.m. meeting against the University of St. Thomas (TX). The game will be streamed live on FloCollege.
