WSOC Score Three Unanswered, Taking Down St. Thomas, 3-1

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Women's Soccer allowed an early goal before scoring three unanswered on Friday night at home against University of St. Thomas, 3-1. The Pirates move to 4-2-2, winning four straight at home. 

The Pirates looked to bounce back on Friday night after two losses on the road in Abilene last weekend. Southwestern played four freshman in the starting 11 as this class has showed zero fear to start the year, giving Head Coach Linda Hamilton an abundance of depth. However, the Celts found the back of the net first in the 11th minute. 

Southwestern showed their toughness on Friday night as they equalized four minutes later. Renata Lopez fed Kristine Garcia in the box who turned past her defender and fired a shot off the cross bar into the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the year. Four minutes later, Southwestern took the lead on a beautifully ran set piece straight out of the training ground. Matti Penders and Montse Hernandez-Soto were behind the ball as Hernandez-Soto faked the shot and made a run into the box. Penders found her in stride as Hernandez-Soto went top bins for the goal. 

EJ Searfoss made four critical saves in the first half as the Pirates entered halftime with a one goal lead. In the 67th minute Raquel Alvarez-Fuentes beat her defender before being tripped in the box for a penalty. Penders stepped up and finished the penalty kick off the crossbar and in. After the early goal, Southwestern's defense was dominant leading to another home victory. 

GAME NOTES
  • Garcia found the net for the fourth time for her fifth career goal as she's dominated non-conference play. 
  • Hernandez-Soto scored her first career goal which was well-earned after leading the Pirates defense along with Penders in the middle. 
  • Penders was fantastic with three points on the goal and assist. 
  • Maddie Holland played all 90 minutes as the wing back who neutralized the Celts and built multiple Pirate attacks.
