SEGUIN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Football played exceptional on the defensive end, but failed to cap off long drives on offense leading to a narrow loss on the road to Texas Lutheran Univesity. The Pirates drop to 0-2 overall.
The Pirates looked to change the tide in history against their former SCAC rival, losing the past four meetings. Saturday night was the Pirates first road test after falling 38-35 to the Bulldogs last season. For the second straight week, the first quarter was quiet in scoring as TLU led 3-0 after the Pirates made drove deep in their second drive, but missed the field goal attempt.
In the second quarter, Southwestern took a 7-3 lead after
Tycen Williams and
Devin Baylor carried the drive with six straight rushes.
Jaxon Sims connected with
Reece Cutrer for a 32-yard touchdown on a perfectly thrown sideline ball. However, Pirate offensive drive Sims was picked off on a screen pass as the Bulldog corner returned the pass for six. The Bulldogs took a 9-7 lead into halftime.
Southwestern held tough defensive in the first half playing exceptionally well for a young inexperienced unit. However, TLU scored the first drive of the second half on 11 plays to take a 16-7 lead. The Bulldogs seemed to have full control until
Cam Roberson picked off the Bulldogs along with 51-yard return.
Another strong TLU stand and Pirate missed field goal led to another missed opportunity to start the fourth quarter. However, the Pirate freshman bounced back with a made field goal to cut the deficit to 16-10 with seven minutes to play. The Bulldogs found success in the running game next drive to reclaim a two-score lead, 19-10 which proved to be the difference.
GAME NOTES
- Southwestern held the slight edge in the passing game tonight, but the Bulldogs dominated the ground battle 226-102.
- However, the ground game was vastly improved from last week as Williams totaled 58 yards.
- Cutrer was the standout for the Pirates offensively with 78 yards on five catches and a touchdown.
- Sims finished 16 for 32 on 136 yards.
- The Pirate defense held the Bulldogs to 102 yards passing.
- Martin led the Pirates in tackling once again with 11 as he already has 24 on the season.
- Roberson totaled six tackles and an interception, while Caleb Costantino racked up nine tackles.
