KERRVILLE, TEXAS - Southwestern University Football tied Schreiner University on the road with only one minute left before the Mountaineers won the game as time expired, 31-28. The heart breaking loss moves the Pirates to 0-3 before entering conference play following a bye week.
The Mountaineers entered 1-1 after starting their program with a win over Austin College. Southwestern entered 0-2 after losing a tight game to Texas Lutheran last weekend as the defense was excellent in the first two weeks, but the offense made too many errors to win games against stiff competition.
Southwestern threw the first punch as
Jaxon Sims found
Parker Threats for an 87-yard touchdown as the long ball was available for the taking all night. Threats has been a breakout performer who take the top off a defense with 172 yards in three games. Schreiner punched back to tie the game at seven to end the quarter.
Another Mountaineer touchdown put the Pirates in a corner as they needed to respond offensively. Sims answered the bell with an 18-play touchdown drive as three different Pirates running backs took carries with
Tycen Williams out. The drive was capped off by a
Reece Cutrer 20-yard reception. Southwestern forced a punt on the next drive.
Samuel Williams picked up a fumble from
Devin Baylor and ran for 76 yards on a unique play.
Hudson Eidem stepped in at running back and found the edge on a six-yard touchdown as the Pirates led 21-14 at halftime.
Despite the momentum, Schreiner held the Pirates to seven points in the second half. Sims threw two picks in the half, one resulting in a defensive score for the Mountaineers. However, down seven the junior Quarterback found
Graydon Thompson for a 54-yard touchdown. The score tied the game at 28 with only 1:20 to play. Seven plays later, Schreiner drove down with a chance to hit a 20-yard field goal for the win. The Pirates attempted to ice the kicker, but the Mountaineers hit the kick for the win.
GAME NOTES
- The Pirates passing game had more yards than the first two games combined with 287.
- Sims finished with three passing touchdowns as the dynamic plays are still available for the Pirates.
- Threats finished with 112 yards, while Cutrer had 81 yards.
- The running game also had a season high with 219 yards.
- Southwestern lost the turnover battle tonight as Schreiner committed zero.
- Jameer Martin led the Pirate defense for the third straight game with nine tackles.
- Cam Roberson also added nine tackles as both racked up two tackles for a loss.
