SEWANEE, TENNESSEE - Southwestern University Baseball battled a long rain delay with the lead after six innings against Sewanee. However, the Pirates surrendered six seventh inning runs which led to a tight loss on Saturday afternoon, 10-9. The rain delay led to the Pirates rescheduling game two to a doubleheader on Sunday.
The Pirates fall to 4-12 in the SAA as they will likely need to go 5-0 in their final conference games to have a chance at making the conference tournament. The teams the Pirates are chasing are Millsaps College (5-13), Centre College (8-9), Berry College (9-9), and Oglethorpe University (9-8). These five teams are all battling for four spots as Trinity University and Rhodes College are already in.
Southwestern jumped on Sewanee in the fourth inning with three runs curtesy of senior
Connor Duffey, junior
Owen Stevenson, and freshman
Alex Ervesun. Rain began to pour that sent the game into a long rain delay. However, the Tigers turf helped finish the game as the Pirates led 6-4 after six innings with another clutch RBI from Ervesun.
Sophomore
Darion Rogers went six innings with four earned runs and three strikeouts, delivering much needed length to set up the series. However, the Pirate bullpen was not as effective surrendering six runs in the seventh, struggling to find the zone.
With a four run deficit, Ervesun stepped up in the eighth with a three-run bomb. Senior two-way
Tres Organ kept the Pirates at within one run in a scoreless eighth on the mound. The Pirates caught some bad luck with a line out double play to end it.
Ervesun finished a career day with four hits and five RBI's which were both season bests. The freshman has excelled recently with 10 RBI's in his last four games. Junior
Cale Cochran also had a career day with four hits as he's back to .300 on the year. Sophomore
Chase Adams and Stevenson also totaled multi-hit performances.
