SEWANEE, TENNESSEE - Southwestern University Baseball were eliminated from SAA Tournament contention after losing a doubleheader on Sunday. The Pirates fell 13-7 in the game two of the series and 12-2 in the series finale.
GAME 1
Southwestern entered the doubleheader knowing they likely needed to finish the season 5-0 or 4-1 with help. After five innings, Southwestern held a 3-2 lead. Junior
Owen Stevenson swatted his 11th home run of the year at third in the SAA. Sophomore
Brandon Lang followed with his third home run of the year in the fifth.
Freshman
Zane Heiliger looked effective through four innings giving up only two runs before running out of gas. Heiliger left with six earned runs on his belt, while the Pirate bullpen also struggled trailing 13-4 after seven. Freshman
Cory Mathews poked an RBI double before senior
Connor Duffey smashed a two-run double. The three-run inning was not enough after a costly sixth and seventh inning.
GAME 2
The Pirates started freshman
Samuel Garcia in the series finale. The Tigers jumped on Garcia with three runs in the first. Garcia bounced back with a clean second and third inning before Sewanee posted four runs in the fourth.
Mathews swatted his first career home run in the fifth to cut within five. Despite the jolt, Southwestern's offense went stale and the bullpen was not as effective as the Centre series leading to a sweep on the road.
