Pougnet Shuts The Door, Clinching First SAA Series Win Over Centre, 6-5

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Baseball took down Centre College on Saturday afternoon to win their first SAA series of the season, 6-5. The Pirates move to 4-11 in the conference with a chance to climb back into SAA tournament discussions with six games left against Sewanee and Millsaps College on the road.

Freshman Zane Heiliger received the start on a windy day in Texas. Heiliger rounded back into the form that he was in when he started against Rhodes College, going 6.1 innings on Saturday against Centre. Freshman Alex Ervesun stayed red hot with single in the first that scored two. Southwestern took advantage of a crucial Centre error as senior Tres Organ roped a single to score two. Sophomore Chase Adams extended the lead to 5-0 after two innings.

The Pirates continued to grind out at bats against a talented Centre staff. Ervesun walked with the bases loaded to build a 6-0 Pirate lead as Heiliger was rolling with five innings of scoreless pitching. However, Centre strung together some hits in the sixth highlighted by a three run double as the Colonels scored five. Heiliger went back out in the seventh, leaving two runners on with two outs for senior reliever Max Pougnet

Pougnet was the star in his final game at Rockwell Family Field. He only registered 1.1 innings as a Pirate entering his the year, but has emerged as a weapon out of the pen. Pougnet has gone 5.1 innings straight without a run surrendered. The Colorado native manufactured pivotal strikeouts to shut the door on the Colonels in the final 2.1 innings to seal the victory as the Pirates offense was being held down. The win keeps the Pirates tournament hopes alive entering the final six games.

NOTES
  • Organ went 5 for 11 at the plate this weekend in his final home games.
  • Ervesun went 4 for 10 with five RBI's.
  • The biggest component in the Pirates success was the bullpen going 11 innings with only two earned runs.
  • Another key in the Pirates two wins were the starting pitching length as freshman Samuel Garcia and Heiliger combined to throw 12 innings.
UP NEXT
