Pirates Fall in Narrow 3–4 Battle with Hope College

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS — The Southwestern University women's tennis team dropped a tightly contested match to Hope College, 4–3, on Friday at Henderson Courts. With the loss, the Pirates move to 3–3 overall on the season.

Southwestern opened the match strong by securing the doubles point with wins in two of the three matches. At No. 1 doubles, Daryl Locke and Isa Cepeda earned a 6–4 victory over Jana Beier and Amanda Lopykinski to give the Pirates an early advantage.

Hope responded with a narrow win at No. 2 doubles as Hadley Krygier and Phoebe Walker edged Katia Childs and Lilly Perkins 7–5. The Pirates clinched the doubles point at No. 3 where Kimberly Duncan and Addison Powell defeated Mallory Matthews and Wren Walker 6–4.

In singles play, Hope claimed four of the six matches to narrowly secure the team victory.

At No. 3 singles, Kimberly Duncan delivered a key win for the Pirates, battling through three sets to defeat Sophia Grzesiak 6–4, 7–6 (7–3). Lilly Perkins also added a point for Southwestern at No. 4 singles with a strong 6–4, 6–3 win over Phoebe Walker.

Hope collected singles wins at the top two spots, as Amanda Lopykinski defeated Daryl Locke 6–1, 6–4 at No. 1 singles and Jana Beier topped Isa Cepeda 6–4, 6–0 at No. 2 singles. The Dutch also earned victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to clinch the narrow 4–3 team result.
