GEORGETOWN, TEXAS — The Southwestern University women's tennis team battled to a narrow 4-3 victory over Centre College on Sunday, March 29th, in an exciting SAA showdown. The Pirates improved their overall record with a hard-fought road win that came down to the final singles matches.
Southwestern started strong in doubles play, taking two of three matches to gain an early advantage. In the No. 1 spot, Isa Cepeda and Daryl Locke held off Grace Williams and Carlie Mitchell 7-6, 7-3, while Addison Powell and Kimberly Duncan secured the No. 3 doubles point with a 6-3 win over Skylar Keesee and Sophie Maddux. Centre College claimed the No. 2 doubles point as Kayla Harger and Kennedy Herring defeated Lilly Perkins and Katia Childs 6-2.
Singles action saw a mix of tight battles and decisive victories. Daryl Locke captured the No. 2 singles match 7-5, 6-4, and Kimberly Duncan dominated in the No. 3 slot with a 6-4, 6-1 win. Katia Childs clinched the match for Southwestern with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles, while Addison Powell fell 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 6 spot. Isa Cepeda battled to a three-set loss 4-6, 6-3, 4-6 in the No. 1 singles match. In No. 4 singles, Carrie Foster of Centre College overcame Lilly Perkins 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 to round out the scoring.
