GEORGETOWN, TEXAS – The Southwestern University softball team secured a series sweep over Sewanee on Sunday afternoon, closing out the weekend with a 5–4 victory in the finale. With the win, the Pirates improve to 5-1 in SAA play and move into first place in the conference standings.
GAME 3 – Southwestern 5, Sewanee 4
The series finale featured a back-and-forth battle, as Southwestern used timely hitting and a strong sixth inning to edge the Tigers.
Sewanee struck first in the second inning with a solo home run from Maggie Barker before adding another run on a Southwestern throwing error to take a 2–0 lead. The Pirates answered in the third when Daniella Clark drove in Allie Fields with an RBI single to cut the deficit in half.
Southwestern took the lead in the fifth inning, beginning with a sacrifice fly from Mattie Wilkie that evened the score at 2–2. Clark delivered again later in the inning with an RBI single to put the Pirates ahead 3–2. The Tigers responded in the bottom half with an RBI single to tie the game at 3–3.
The decisive moment came in the sixth inning, as Sophia Ytuarte doubled to left center to bring home Emery Bell and give Southwestern a 4–3 edge. Aryana Dunkelberger followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 5–3. Sewanee added an unearned run in the bottom of the inning, but the Pirates held on in the seventh to complete the sweep.
