GEORGETOWN, TEXAS – The Southwestern University softball team dropped game one of its SAA conference series to Rhodes College on Thursday afternoon, falling 6–3. Despite a late push in the seventh inning, the Pirates were unable to complete the comeback, moving to 5-2 in conference play.
GAME 1 – Rhodes 6, Southwestern 3
Southwestern battled throughout but was unable to overcome a mid-game surge by Rhodes.
The Lynx opened the scoring in the second inning, using a two-RBI double down the left field line from Talia Travis to take an early 2–0 advantage. The Pirates were held off the scoreboard through the first four innings before responding in the fifth.
Aryana Dunkelberger sparked the offense with a two-run home run to left center, bringing in Kaydence Garza and tying the game at 2–2. Rhodes answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning, stringing together three runs on RBI doubles from Kaitlyn Sun and Isabela Barber to reclaim a 5–2 lead.
Rhodes added another run in the sixth on an RBI single, extending the lead to 6–2.
Southwestern continued to fight in the seventh, as Allie Fields delivered an RBI single and advanced to second on a Rhodes error, scoring Dunkelberger and trimming the deficit to 6–3. The Pirates threatened late but were unable to find a gap in the outfield to extend the rally.
