Pirates Take Doubles Point but Fall to No. 20 Sewanee in SAA Opener

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University men's tennis opened conference play on Saturday with a 6-1 loss to No. 20 Sewanee. The Pirates now stand at 10-3 overall and 0-1 in SAA competition.

Southwestern came out strong in doubles action, claiming two of the three courts. At No. 1 doubles, the duo of Joseph Snyman and Nolan Alvarez secured a convincing 6-1 victory over Sewanee's Samuel Schroerlucke and Andre-Remi Jakobi. The Pirates followed that performance with a dominant showing at No. 2 doubles, where Bernie Clemente and Parth Patel cruised to a 6-0 win against Drew Rukavina and Max Verellen.

The doubles point ultimately came down to the tightly contested No. 3 match. Ashton Ellis and Landon Sosebee battled through a back-and-forth contest but fell just short in a 7-6, 8-6 decision to Henry Hyden and Aidan McVeigh, giving Sewanee the edge heading into singles play.

In singles competition, Sewanee took control, winning all six matches to secure the team victory. Clemente highlighted the effort for the Pirates at the top spot, pushing his opponent to a competitive four-set match before falling 7-6, 7-1, 4-6, 1-0.

At No. 2 singles, Porter Arens represented the Pirates, competing against Henry Hyden. Ashton Ellis fell 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 3 position, while Parth Patel dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match at No. 4. At No. 5, Arian Patel battled but ultimately fell 6-0, 6-2 to Drew Rukavina. Nolan Alvarez also saw action in singles, falling in a hard-fought four-set match at No. 6 to Charlie Schweppe.

Despite the loss, the Pirates showed strength in doubles play and will look to carry that momentum forward as conference competition continues.
