Walk-Off and Big Hits Fuel Pirates’ Sweep of Bethel

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Southwestern University softball team closed out its non-conference slate in dominant fashion, sweeping Bethel University (Minn.) in a Tuesday doubleheader at Taylor-Sanders Field. The Pirates walked off game one with a 7–6 victory before securing the sweep with a 7–2 win in game two.

GAME 1 – Southwestern 7, Bethel 6

Southwestern battled back-and-forth with Bethel in an exciting opener that ended in walk-off fashion.

Bethel struck first in the second inning with a two-RBI fielder's choice before Sophia Ytuarte answered with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 2–1. The Royals extended their lead in the third with a two-run single, but the Pirates responded as Daniella Clark delivered an RBI single to make it 4–2.

The turning point came in the fourth inning when Mattie Wilkie launched a grand slam to right center, scoring Calle Collier, Allie Fields, and Izabella Hernandez to give Southwestern a 6–4 advantage.

Bethel rallied in the seventh, tying the game at 6–6 with a pair of runs. In the bottom half, the Pirates delivered the final blow as Ytuarte singled up the middle to score Logan Kieselhorst, sealing the 7–6 walk-off victory.

GAME 2 – Southwestern 7, Bethel 2

Southwestern carried its momentum into game two, using a big second inning to take control early.

After Bethel opened the scoring in the second inning, the Pirates responded with a four-run frame. Macey Gilman tied the game with an RBI double before Aryana Dunkelberger followed with an RBI single. Calle Collier added an RBI double, and a passed ball allowed another run to score, giving Southwestern a 4–1 lead.

Bethel cut the deficit to 4–2 in the third, but the Pirates added an unearned run later in the inning to extend the lead. Southwestern put the game away in the sixth when Izabella Hernandez doubled to center field, driving in two runs to secure the 7–2 victory.

  • Southwestern turns its attention to conference play following a strong finish to its non-conference schedule. The Pirates are back at Taylor-Sanders Field on Saturday, March 21st to take on Berry College first pitch at 1:00pm.
