BSB Falters In Ninth, Dropping Midweek Battle With Wooster, 10-8

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Baseball fell in tight battle with The College of Wooster on Tuesday afternoon in their final tune up before SAA conference play, 10-8. Senior Garrett Guinn tossed his best appearance of the year out of the pen with 5.2 innings of relief, before exiting in the ninth after a few hits as the Pirates lost their 8-7 lead.

Southwestern and Wooster entered with reversed records as the Fighting Scots sat at an impressive 12-4 record. The first inning was action filled as freshman Alex Ervesun smoked an RBI single, before reigning SAA Athlete of the Week, junior Owen Stevenson, smashed a back side single to score two runs. Sophomore Brandon Lang got the start behind the dish with a career-high four hits on the day. Lang smoked a double in the fourth to score sophomore Chase Adams. However, Southwestern faced a 7-4 deficit after an error and timely Wooster hitting.

Freshman Cory Matthews, senior Connor Duffey, senior Tres Organ, and Lang totaled RBI's as the Pirates took an 8-7 lead into the final frame. Heading into the ninth, Guinn pitched 5.2 innings with only one earned run. Guinn surrendered two singles and a double before handing the ball off to freshman Cam Fucik who retired the final three hitters as the Pirates found themselves down 10-8. The Pirates were retired in order as the Scots escaped with the victory.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Lang is now healthy and looking like a pivotal offensive piece for the Pirates, going 4-5 with two RBI's.
  • Duffey added a 3-4 game with a walk. The senior is batting .418 this year.
  • Organ, Ervesun, and Stevenson also totaled multi-hit games in the effort.
