GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Baseball and Muhlenberg College traded blows on Friday night as the Pirates came out on top with a walkoff double, 6-5. Southwestern takes the series winning the first two games with a chance for the sweep tomorrow morning.
The Mules struck first before senior
Connor Duffey and sophomore
Chase Adams punched right back in the first inning as the Pirates led 2-1. Junior
Owen Stevenson had a night to remember with a 385 foot homerun in the fourth.
Freshman
Ben Roska threw four clean innings with only one run surrendered before running into some trouble in the fifth. The Mules smashed four hits in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Roska left the game with a respectable five innings pitched, four earned runs, and six strikeouts.
The bullpen helped turn the momentum as sophomore
Payne Lochridge tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless ball with three strikeouts and only three hits allowed. Freshman
Cory Mathews was hit by a pitch to knot the game at 5-5. Lochridge handed off the game to senior
Tres Organ who manufactured two outs to send the game to the bottom of the ninth tied.
Freshman
Alex Ervesun took a hit by pitch setting up the game-winning run. With two outs, Stevenson smoked a moonshot into left field that dropped and scored the game-winning run for a walkoff.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Southwestern wins back-to-back games for the first time this year.
- The series win is largely contributed to the pitching staff who has surrendered only five earned runs in two games.
- Stevenson led the squad with two extra-base hits.
- Organ earned the victory by recording the final two outs. The two-way standout garners a save and win already this week.
