GEORGETOWN, TEXAS — The Southwestern University women's tennis team secured a strong 5–2 victory over Washington College on March 11 at Henderson Courts. With the win, the Pirates move to 4–4 overall on the season.
Southwestern started the afternoon by claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. At No. 1 doubles, Isa Cepeda and Daryl Locke controlled the match from the start, defeating Eva Kading and Soleil Namunyola of Washington College 6–2. The Pirates sealed the doubles point at No. 2, where Katia Childs and Lilly Perkins battled to a 7–5 victory over Juanita Arbelaez and Jess Wilde. Washington College picked up the final doubles match as Isabella Sorhegui and Gaby Coutts defeated Kimberly Duncan and Addison Powell 6–2 at No. 3.
The Pirates carried their momentum into singles play, winning four of the six matches to clinch the team victory.
At No. 1 singles, Cepeda delivered a solid performance, defeating Arbelaez 6–4, 6–3. Locke followed with a dominant showing at No. 2 singles, dropping just three games in a 6–2, 6–1 win over Kading.
Southwestern continued its strong run in the middle of the lineup as Duncan secured a 6–4, 6–4 victory against Namunyola at No. 3 singles. Perkins added another point for the Pirates at No. 4 singles, defeating Sofia Sperandei 6–4, 6–3.
Washington College earned its two points in the final two singles matches. Sorhegui defeated Powell 6–2, 6–2 at No. 5 singles, while Wilde outlasted Childs in a tightly contested three-set match at No. 6 singles 7–5, 2–6, 10–5.
