Pirates Open Season with Doubleheader Sweep of Schreiner

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University softball opened the 2026 season with a strong showing on Friday evening, sweeping Schreiner University in a season-opening doubleheader in Kerrville. The Pirates outlasted the Mountaineers 11–9 in game one before rolling to an 11–0 shutout in game two. The doubleheader sweep marks a strong start to the season for Southwestern as the Pirates open the year with momentum on both sides of the ball.

GAME 1 – Southwestern 11, Schreiner 9

Southwestern jumped on the scoreboard early in the second inning when Mattie Wilkie singled to left field to drive in two runs. Schreiner answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame and added two more in the third to take a 6–3 lead.

The Pirates responded in the fourth inning, starting with an RBI groundout by Calle Collier before Aryana Dunkelberger delivered a two-run single to knot the game at 6–6. Southwestern broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring five runs behind a two-run double from Dunkelberger, a two-RBI double from Sophia Ytuarte, and an RBI single by Izabella Hernandez to take an 11–6 advantage. Schreiner pushed across three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Pirates held on to secure the win.

GAME 2 – Southwestern 11, Schreiner 0

The Pirates carried their momentum into game two, scoring twice in the first inning on an RBI walk by Tauryn Alexander and an RBI single from Daniella Clark. Southwestern added three more runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run double from Dunkelberger and an RBI single by Alexander to build a 5–0 lead.

Southwestern continued to apply pressure, extending the lead in the fifth when Kaydence Garza tripled to center field to drive in two runs. The Pirates capped off the scoring with a three-run sixth inning, featuring an RBI single from Clark, a two-RBI double by Macey Gilman, and an RBI double from Ytuarte to seal the 11–0 victory.
