GEORGETOWN, TEXAS — The Southwestern University women's tennis team fell 5–2 to former conference foe Concordia University Texas on Friday evening, moving the Pirates to 2–2 on the season while the Tornados improved to 2–3.
Southwestern opened the match with a strong showing in doubles play, capturing the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. The duo of Isa Cepeda and Daryl Locke earned a 6–3 win at No. 1 doubles over Johanna Winkler and Aria Moreni, while Katia Childs and Lilly Perkins secured a 6–4 victory at No. 2 doubles against Valerie Sanchez and Emily Pullen. Concordia responded with a 6–3 win at No. 3 doubles, but the Pirates' pair of doubles victories gave Southwestern early momentum heading into singles competition.
In singles play, Concordia Texas rallied by winning five of six matches to clinch the team victory.
At No. 1 singles, Daryl Locke battled through a tightly contested three-set match before falling to Johanna Winkler, 6–1, 5–7, 6–4. Isa Cepeda also pushed her match to three sets at No. 2 singles, taking the opening set before Valerie Sanchez mounted a comeback to win 1–6, 6–2, 6–4.
Emily Pullen earned a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles over Kimberly Duncan, 6–1, 7–5, and Alyssa Estrella followed with a 6–4, 7–5 win against Katia Childs at No. 5 singles. Concordia secured another point at No. 6 singles, where Kailey Albrecht edged Addison Powell in a tight pro-set, 8–7 (7–5).
Southwestern's lone singles point came at No. 4, where Lilly Perkins claimed the win after Aria Moreni retired from the match, giving the Pirates their second overall point of the evening.
Despite claiming the doubles point and competing in several tightly contested matches, the Pirates were unable to hold off Concordia's surge in singles play as the Tornados secured the 5–2 decision.
