BROWNWOOD, TEXAS - Southwestern University Baseball displayed an offensive outburst this weekend with 36 total runs, but failed to keep the Howard Payne University from scoring taking one of three games. The Pirates fell on Friday 17-11, before picking up the first victory of 2026 on Saturday, 13-4. The Yellow Jackets took the third game after the Pirates nearly made a comeback, 13-12.
GAME 1 - SWU 17, HPU 11
- Southwestern struggled the tame the Howard Payne offense, falling behind 12-1 after four innings.
- The Pirates offense erupted with seven runs in the final three innings of the game, but couldn't compete with 17 Yellow Jacket runs.
- Senior Tres Organ, sophomore Chase Adams, and freshman Connor Daley all finished with multi-hit nights.
GAME 2 - SWU 13, HPU 4
- Freshman standout Ben Roska toed the rubber on Saturday coming off a six-inning, zero earned run performance last weekend.
- After scoring 17 runs on Friday, Roska limited to the Yellow Jackets to four runs in seven innings of work.
- The freshman gave the Pirates much needed length, adding five punchouts.
- The Pirates scored the first eight runs of the game with a collective effort, tallying RBI's from freshman Alex Ervesun, senior Connor Duffey, senior Ben Feuer, Adams, Daley, and Organ.
- Freshman Cory Mathews continues to find barrels at the top of the lineup, batting .409. Mathews went 3-5 with two runs.
- Adams led the squad with four RBI's in a 3-4 masterclass hitting display. Organ also totaled three hits in the effort.
GAME 3 - SWU 12, HPU 13
- Southwestern capped off the weekend with another explosive offensive performance. However, eight runs surrendered in the first three innings is a difficult to battle back from.
- Nevertheless, Organ doubled to narrow the deficit to 8-6.
- The Pirates trailed by three in the final inning before the dynamic duo of Adams and Organ struck again, pulling within 13-12.
- Adams was left stranded for the final out as the Pirates fell to 1-6 on the season.
GAME NOTES
- Despite the series loss, Southwestern brings extra swagger into their step offensively, scoring 43 runs across four games.
- The Pirates only scored eight runs in their opening series against University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
- Organ and Adams were fantastic, combing for 17 hits in 36 plate appearances, 16 RBI's, and 17 runs this week.
