WLAX Earns Opening Night Victory Over PLU, Scoring Final Three Goals, 8-5

PUYALLUP, WASHINGTON - Southwestern Women's Lacrosse travels across the country and beats Pacific Lutheran University on Friday night for a hard-fought victory, 8-5. The Pirates start the year 1-0 with two road games in Washington against PLU and University of Puget Sound on Sunday.

The defense was phenomenal on Friday, forcing the Lutes into committing 25 turnovers as the Pirates led 5-5 with ten minutes remaining. Junior Sydney Martin took over and silenced the Lutes with three unanswered goals, while the defense held tough surrendering zero Pacific Lutheran goals down the stretch. 

Sophomore Hannah Colvin was fantastic with seven saves on a .583 save percentage. Senior Grace Van Dinter played a pivotal role in the defensive effort with four caused turnovers, while senior Elaina Seeley and freshman Peyton Shindler created two turnovers each.

  • Shindler scored the first goal of the night inside the crease on a dime from senior Katie Pratt
  • The goal marked a career first of many for the freshman. 
  • Sophomore Wenny Stein spun off her defender and fired a shot passed the keeper to carry a 2-1 into the second quarter. Shindler assisted on the goal.

  • Freshman Nia Trevillion drew a penalty and executed the free position goal, bouncing it past the goalie. 
  • The Southwestern defense gave PLU little room to operate, taking a 3-1 lead into halftime.

  • Southwestern started the third on the wrong foot, allowing PLU to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Seeley buried a goal to stop the Lutes momentum, assisted by Van Dinter.

  • Martin took over in the fourth with four goals. 
  • The freshman extended executed a man-up goal, before TLU tied it up at 5-5. 
  • Southwestern went the final 10:27 without surrendering a goal. 
  • Martin buried the Lutes with three unassisted goals in the final six minutes, cementing a legacy quarter from the junior to seal an opening night victory.
