SU Football Falls Short On Last Minute TLU Touchdown, 38-35

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern Football scored with three minutes left to play in the rivalry matchup against Texas Lutheran University before the Bulldogs scored on fourth down at the five yard line with nine seconds to play in the game, edging out the Pirates 38-35. 

Both teams combined for 39 points in a riveting fourth quarter highlighted by a 40-yard touchdown catch from junior Graydon Thompson leaping over and grabbing it in front of his defender. Junior Jacob Smith assumed the starting role after an injury last week and dominated with 473 all-purpose yards, three passing touchdowns, and two rushing. Thompson turned in another big performance with 186 receiving yards. 

1Q HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Pirate offense started slow with a punt and an interception, falling behind 7-3. 
  • Freshman Chase Lanham stepped up to nail the 29-yard field goal. 
2Q HIGHLIGHTS
  • Southwestern found themselves in an early 17-3 hole as the Bulldogs found success on the ground. 
  • Thompson turned the switch of the game catching a pass at midfield from Smith and scampering all the way for a 78-yard touchdown. 
  • The Pirates turned the Bulldogs over on downs in the next drive, highlighted by a massive sack from senior Chuks Ikwuemesi
  • Freshman Samuel Williams caught a 37-yard pass before halftime, but the score remained 17-10 Bulldogs at half. 
3Q HIGHLIGHTS
  • Southwestern started the second half with a methodical drive, capped off by Thompson's second touchdown for 21 yards. 
  • The Pirates forced an early punt and drove down the field on the next drive. The squad squandered an opportunity to take the lead missing a field goal.
4Q HIGHLIGHTS
  • Texas Lutheran scored to take the seven-point advantage before Smith led the Pirates down the field for a rushing touchdown of his own. 
  • After the fumbled Southwestern extra point, TLU scored another touchdown making it 31-23 Bulldogs. 
  • The Pirates responded again as the running game carried them down the field, concluded with Smith's second rushing touchdown of the game. 
  • The extra point failed as the Pirates trailed 31-29. 
  • Southwestern got the ball back as Thompson caught arguably the highlight reel of the season over his defenders head for his third receiving touchdown. The Pirate lead was 35-31 after the failed two-point conversion with three minutes to play. 
  • TLU moved the ball down to the goal line with under 30 seconds to play. The Pirates forced fourth down with 13 seconds to play. 
  • The Bulldogs found a man open the in the back of the end zone to beat the Pirates, 38-35. 

GAME NOTES
  • Five of the past ten rivarly games with TLU have resulted in one score contests. 
  • Samuel Williams posted a big night with a career-high 89 receiving yards. 
  • Smith stepped up at quarterback with 366 yards passing and 107 yards rushing. He contributed to all five touchdowns as the Pirates are in good hands heading into conference play. 
  • Thompson's 186 receiving yards gives him a monstrous 420 yards in three games and six touchdowns. 
  • Senior Cesar Navarro led the defense with seven tackles on the night.

Southwestern takes next weekend off before traveling to Trinity University on October 4.
