The Pirates Aren't Slowing Down Anytime Soon

2/12/2025 3:15:00 PM

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Southwestern University Men's Track and Field teams traveled to Houston, Texas where they competed in the FasTrak Athletix Last Chance Meet on Saturday, February 8th to close out the Indoor season. The Pirates are reaching new heights and speeds during the 2025 season thus far.

Assistant Track & Field Coach - Joe Sponsel had this to say post meet "I think the team handled the fast start to the season really well. Attitudes were positive and open to competing earlier and more often than we had in the past. For the distance group specifically, we got a good reminder of some classic lessons about racing as well as learned some new ones. Same goes for the coaching staff. I know how to get the team better prepared for a full indoor season next year. Hopefully, those lessons will translate sooner too, into the outdoor season and have us rolling from the get go. In the meantime, we have a few weeks with no races where we can get back in the lab and focus on some more specific facets of training."

Coach Johnny was thrilled to discuss the season thus far saying "This indoor season was a great experience. It gave us an early opportunity to see how we perform under the stress of competition, to see where our conditioning and mechanics are, and how mentally tough we are. I hope everyone walked away knowing "I can and will be very competitive at the outdoor conference meet. I will commit to working hard on my skills and conditioning, getting healthy, being a positive support to my teammates, and being ready for the outdoor conference meet. We have a few stops along the way for evaluations and corrections but the next big stop is the Outdoor Conference!!"
