MSOC Advances To SAA Tournament Championship, Beating Centre 3-1

Pirates Shatter Program Wins Record With 15th Victory

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern Men's Soccer jumped on Centre College early in the first half and never looked back, advancing the SAA Tournament Championship after a 3-1 victory. The Pirates win marked their 15th of the season, surpassing the all-time school wins record. The previous record holders were the 2001 and 2013 Pirates squads.

Southwestern relished the opportunity of hosting the SAA Conference Tournament on Friday with a massive support crowd. The squad has the opportunity to officially clinch a berth to the NCAA Tournament with an automatic bid on the line to the winner in Sunday's match against Berry College.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Before the Pirates match, Berry upset Trinity University on Friday afternoon clinching a spot in Sunday's championship.
  • Southwestern matched up with Centre for the second time this season, after beating the Colonels 2-0 in the regular season.
  • The Pirates dominated possesion to start the match.
  • Sophomore Danny Wasserman picked up a deflected ball from sophomore Quinn MacLeod. The junior fired in a curling shot to take an early lead in the 17th minute.
  • The second unit entered the match around the 23rd minute as the Pirates reload. Junior Daniel Sartorio has been in top form the best couple of matches with a goal against Trinity last week.
  • Sartorio flicked a ball to freshman Anthony Peacher who timed his run to perfection. The freshman connected with fellow freshman Grey Richards in the box for a beautiful second goal.
  • The Pirates led at halftime, but as Head Coach Norman said in the post game interview, "teams on their final breath of tough to put away."
  • Moreover, Southwestern weathered a strong Colonels start to the half.
  • Then, the second entered the match and dominated once again. Sartorio dished to Peacher who dribbled the ball about 40 yards, made a move and beat the keeper for the Pirates third goal.
  • The combination of Sartorio, Peacher, and Richards was top tier all night.
  • Centre spoiled the Pirates shutout in the final minutes, but still dominated play in the huge victory.
