GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Football struggled to move the ball on offense, dropping the Homecoming game against Maryville College on Saturday, 44-13. The Scots had 213 more yards than the Pirates on offense, showcasing their strong passing game.
The Pirates fall to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Southwestern has two massive conference away games the next two weekends before returning home on November 15.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Southwestern and Maryville matched up for the first time in program history as the Scots recently joined the conference for Football.
- The Scots scored first on a pivotal offensive turnover from the Pirates. Sophomore quarterback Jaxon Sims fumbled the snap as the Scots recovered the ball and returned it for six.
- Maryville made it 14-0 with a strong running attack.
- Junior Jacob Smith entered the game at quarterback leading the Pirates into the end zone on a 16-yard rush. Sophomore Caleb Harmon set up the touchdown with a big sack on defense to give the Pirates good field position.
- However, Maryville found the passing game scoring 16 unanswered points on two touchdowns and a safety. The Pirates trailed 30-6 at halftime.
- Smith manufactured his second rushing touchdown of the game in the second half, but six points was all the Pirates scratched across.
- Junior Cam Roberson led the team in tackles with eight. Sophomore Gilbert Anderson III picked up an interception, while freshman Hudson Eidem had a special teams fumble force and recovery.
