Southwestern Football Takes Victory over McMurry in Home Opener

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern Football opened up the 2024 season on Saturday Night, battling the McMurry University War Hawks on their home field at Birkelbach Stadium. The Pirates took a 17-13 lead going into halftime after a fourteen point second quarter. Both teams were held scoreless in the third but late in the fourth quarter McMurry took a 20-17 lead over the Pirates. In what was a fight to the end for Southwestern, the Pirates scored with just over three minutes remaining on the clock to a 24-20 victory over the War Hawks. 

 OFFENSIVE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Quarterback Jaylen Spriggs threw for 237 yards, completing 19 of 32 passes (59.4%). Spriggs also rushed for two touchdowns on the night. 
  • Leroy Rodriguez rushed for fifty-four yards and averaged 4.8 yards per carry. 
  • Aiden Huerta averaged 24.6 yards per catch, racking up 123 yards on the night. Huerta caught the game winning touchdown from freshman quarterback Jaxon Sims. 
  • Dugan Sexton caught five passes for 89 yards, a career high for the senior wide out. 
DEFENSIVE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Freshman linebacker Caleb Harmon led the Pirates in tackles with nine, collecting a half sack and two tackles for loss. 
  • Aidan O'Connell tallied seven tackles with one half-sack and one, half-tackle for loss. 
  • Ethan Mills broke up three passes against War Hawk wide receivers, also having three tackles. 
  • Jameer Martin and Cesar Navarro were both second on the squad in tackles with eight, Martin also recorded a pass broken up.
NOTES
  • Southwestern Head Coach Bill Kriesel earned his first win as leader of the Pirates program.
  • The Pirates now sport a 7-1 record over the War Hawks in it's teams history. 
  • Charlie Founier kicked off the Pirates scoring with a 35 yard field goal in the first quarter. 
  • The Pirates went for 432 yards of total offense, while limiting McMurry to 336 yards and forcing two turnovers.
