Football Starts Season 2-0, First Time Since 2019

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern Football hit the road this weekend, traveling to the Pacific Northwest in a match-up against the University of Puget Sound Loggers in Tacoma, Washington. Southwestern led Puget Sound 14-13 heading into the second quarter, but it was all Pirates from then on. Southwestern scored five touchdowns and two field goals to hang up a 47-19 victory over the Loggers. 

OFFENSIVE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sophomore running back Leroy Rodriguez rushed twelve times for 114 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 9.5 yards a carry.

  • Junior running back Christian Reeves also rushed for seventy-seven yards and two touchdowns on nine attempts. 

  • Freshman quarterback Jaxon Sims got his first collegiate start as a Pirate. He threw for 115 yards and one touchdown. That touchdown came on a completion to Dugan Sexton in the second quarter. 

DEFENSIVE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior defensive end Maurion Williams-Jack tallied two and a half sacks for eighteen yards as a part of five total tackles. 

  • Jameer Martin, DJ James, and Chris Pritchett assembled three interceptions for the Pirate defense. James's interception was a part of five of his pass break-ups. 

  • Aidan O'Connell had seven tackles with a tackle for loss of two yards. 

  • Freshman linebacker Caleb Harmon recorded seven tackles, all unassisted. 

NOTES

  • The Pirates rushed for 279 yards on the ground on a day where they amassed 394 yards of total offense on fifty-nine plays.

  • The Pirates sacked the Loggers three time for twenty yards while giving up no sacks on the offensive end. 

  • Southwestern was six for six on red zone chances and held the Loggers to just one for three inside the twenty.

  • Southern Athletic Association conference play kicks off next week for Southwestern. The Pirates travel to Conway, Arkansas to take on the Hendrix College Warriors, Saturday September 21st at 12:00 PM.
