Football Dominates Rhodes Start to Finish, Moves to 3-2 on the Season

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern Football battled the Rhodes College Lynx on Saturday, their first home game in five weeks since their season opening win against McMurry. It was evident the Pirates were energized to play in front of their home crowd, Southwestern put together a complete team effort against the Lynx highlighted by a 28 point second quarter that gave the Pirates a 35-0 lead going into halftime. A touchdown and a field goal was all they would need in the second half to take home a 45-22 victory over Rhodes College at Birkelbach Field. 

OFFENSIVE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Leroy Rodriguez exploded for 222 yards of total offense, 105 rushing and 117 yards receiving, putting up two touchdowns through the air and averaging 6.2 yards per carry on the ground. 
  • Jaylen Spriggs rushed for forty nine yards and three touchdowns while also throwing for 185 yards and one touchdown. Spriggs came away with a 61.1% completion percentage. 
  • Christian Reeves was the second leading rusher for the Pirates, running for sixty one yards and the Pirates second touchdown of the game. 

DEFENSIVE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sophomore defensive back J.P. Reyes led all Pirates in tackles with nine on the day. 
  • Caleb Harmon recorded one sack and and six total tackles with a 1/2 tackle for loss. Cesar Navarro also went for one sack against the Lynx.
  • Freshman corner Dylan Jackson and sophomore defensive back Jameer Martin both broke up two Rhodes passes. Martin also came away with four tackles. 
NOTES
  • The Southwestern offense put up 531 yards of total offense against Rhodes, their highest of the season so far. 
  • Southwestern was only forced to punt one time, and were 8/12 and 1/1 on third and fourth down conversions, respectively.
  • The Pirate defense limited Rhodes to just 71 yards on the ground and shut out the Lynx in the first half.
