Women's Soccer Scores a Season-High Five Goals to Defeat Schreiner

Box Score

KERRVILLE, Texas — The Southwestern University Pirates women's soccer team had its best offensive output of the season, defeating the Schreiner University Mountaineers 5-1 on the road.

Entering the match, goalkeepers Mary Cardone and Maddie Saucedo were ranked No. 1 and 2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) in save percentage.

Too often, however, the Schreiner defense has overtaxed Saucedo, giving up 182 shots, including 95 on goal; ranking fifth in the SCAC in goals against. The Pirates were able to exploit the defense, piling up a 16-6 shot advantage with 10 on goal.

The Pirates did all their damage in the first half with all five goals and three assists coming from a different Pirate before the break.

First year Juliet Pridgen broke through at the 16:02 mark, scoring on an assist from Hallie Rutherford for her second goal of the season. It was Rutherford's fourth assist of the season.

Eight minutes later, Juliana Chapa found Alexis Guajardo. Nearly 30 minutes into the match, Maya Fuller scored an unassisted goal. Gracie Jackson followed with a goal off a pass from Sydney Kattaward and Whitney Whitehill rounded out the Pirates' scoring with an unassisted goal at the 42:26 mark.

With the match out of reach, both teams changed goalies for the second half, emptying the bench to finish the match. Schreiner's Kayla Mullen scored early in the second half on an unassisted goal over Alyssa Sucrese. Cardone finished with two saves in a first-half shutout.

The Pirates improve to 8-1 on the season and bring their season goal total to 19 for an average of 2.11 per game. Southwestern will travel to San Antonio on Sunday for a match against defending SCAC Champion Trinity University.
