Late rallies come up short as Pirates drop double-header

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

IRVING, Texas – Despite outhitting host the University of Dallas in both games of a double-header Saturday afternoon Southwestern University fell, 5-2 and 4-1 in a non-conference baseball game from Crusader Field.

The loss dropped the Pirates record to 1-12 on the year as Dallas improved to 9-5 overall. The three-game series does not count for either team in the SCAC standings as the Crusaders will visit Georgetown in late April for the conference meeting.

Game one saw the Pirates leave eight runners on base while outhitting UD, 9-7.

Senior Zach Lynch paced Southwestern going 4-for-4 with an RBI in the first inning to give the Pirates an early lead. However, Dallas would answer on a two out single in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 1-1.

Dallas put together three runs on four hits in the second to chase Southwestern starter Jacob Kendra from the mound. His relief, Jeremy Rice was solid allowing only two hits in the final five innings allowing one unearned run.

After the Crusaders added their final run in the fourth, the Pirates attempted to rally in the sixth inning when Lynch led off with another single. He would score on a two out singles in the gap from Colten Shea before being stranded with two other Pirates.

Game two saw more solid pitching from both ball clubs as Jason Stading earned a tough loss after pitching six innings of four-hit baseball. Stading struck out three while allowing just two runs.

Opposite of Stading, the Crusader starter was able to scatter four hits over six innings as well but allowed no runs.

Southwestern again left six runners on base as Jake Pawelek and Tyler Herriage finished with multiple hits. Lynch also finished 1-for-4 to extend his hit streak to four games.

The Pirates and Crusaders will close out the three game series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
