Pirates Push Past Crusaders

Box Score

BELTON, Texas - Southwestern shutout UMHB the last 4 innings to hold on for the 8-7 win on Tuesday night.

The Pirates got off to a good start, scoring in the top of the 1st inning.  Cruz Luna hit a one out single and advanced to second on Jeff Glasgow's walk.  The first run crossed the plate on a double down the left field line by Zachary Lynch.  Then Colton Shea drew a walk to load the bases.  Two more runs scored on consecutive walks issued to Tyler Herriage and Will Burks to give Southwestern the early 3-0 lead.

UMHB closed the gap in the bottom half of the 1st and 2nd innings.  Whiddon hit a two out triple to left center and scored on a balk and Taute doubled and later scored on a passed ball to cut it to 3-2.

Southwestern loaded the bases again in the top of the 3rd.  Lynch led off with a single to the shortstop.  Then Shea and Herriage followed with a pair of walks.  Lynch scored on a failed pickoff attempt to extend the lead to 4-2.

The Crusaders took advantage of a couple of errors and a 2 RBI double by Taute to get the upper hand 5-4 in the 3rd.

The Pirates responded back in the top of the 5th to regain the lead.  The offense rallied with two outs as Herriage scored from first base on a Burks double down the left field line.  Then Burks scored on a Ross Meyer single up the middle for the 6-5 advantage.

The two teams continued to leap frog each other, as UMHB scored two runs in the bottom half of the frame to go ahead 7-6.

The last lead change happened in the top of the 6th.  Southwestern loaded the bases on a single by Jay Sterling and walks to Luna and Lynch.  Shea came through in the clutch with a 2 RBI single to right center for what would become the game winning runs.

Carl Mueller and Nino Tutino combined to pitch 4 shutout innings down the stretch for the Pirates to earn the respective win and save.  The offense was led by Zachary Lynch (3-4, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 RBI) and Colton Shea (2-2, 2 BB, 2 RBI).  The win moves Southwestern to 3-30 on the season.

The team travels to the University of Texas-Dallas for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13th, beginning at 12:00pm.
