Second half offense give Pirates dominating win

Box Score

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern scored four goals in the second half to earn their fifth conference victory of the season with a 5-1 win over Dallas to remain in second place in the SCAC.

It was evident early that Southwestern came ready to play as they aggressively attacked the Crusaders and nearly scored three times in the opening 10 minutes as two shots careened off the crossbar and UD's keeper Brigid Hasson made a diving save on the third.

Just seconds later, in the 10th minute, SU saw their hard work pay off as Allie Dillon sent a perfect corner kick into the box. Carol Bentley headed the ball over to Megan McGrath who headed it home just inside the right post for her first goal of the season.

Dallas tied the match 1-1 in the 33rd minute as Abigale Weisbrod took a free kick from 25 yards out that sailed over the Pirate defense and Mariah Escajeda's fingertips and into the netting.

Southwestern took the lead once again in the 57th minute. The Pirates earned a penalty kick after Sarah Bevins was fouled on a breakaway, being tackled in the box. Lindsay Jakszta took the PK but Hasson made a tough save in goal but was unable to gather the ball, allowing Jakszta to put away the rebound to give SU a 2-1 lead.

Cailey McLain scored her first goal of the season and gave SU some breathing room in the 75th minute. Jakszta initiated the attack from the midfield and found Bevins in front of the goal. Bevins took two dribbles and smartly played the ball to her right to a wide open McLain. McLain confidently one-touched the ball into the back of the net, putting the Pirates up 3-1.

The final ten minutes of the match the Pirates put on an offensive exhibition as Jakszta and McLain added one more goal each out of numerous well-executed attacks to arrive at the 5-1 final.

SU, not surprisingly, led in every offensive category taking 27 shots and six corners while allowing just three shots and one corner.

Southwestern improves to 6-7 on the year and 5-2 in the SCAC with the win. They return to the road to face Austin College on Friday night. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
