GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern fell to Concordia University
9-5 and 7-3, both in extra innings, in the first home series of the
season at Rockwell Field on Saturday afternoon.
Concordia third baseman Justin Beasley hit a two-out grand slam
with his team trailing by three runs in the top of the seventh then
capped off a six RBI afternoon with a game winning two run double
in the top of the eighth as Concordia spoiled the first half of
Southwestern's home opening doubleheader on Saturday
afternoon.
Southwestern starting pitcher Brantley Freeman pitched well,
scattering four hits and striking out four without allowing a walk
in five shutout innings. Aaron Garza followed with a scoreless
sixth. In the seventh Pirates reliever Kyle Belski struggled with
his control, walking three before allowing the homer to Beasley.
The Tornadoes added another run to take a 5-3 lead into the bottom
of the inning.
In the Pirates half of the seventh, down by two and with the bases
loaded and two outs Charlie Garrett singled to left scoring John
Wooten from third. Johnny Gavrel came around from second on the
play to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
Beasley's double in the top half of the eighth proved to be
the game winner as the Pirates failed to capitalize in their half
of the inning after a leadoff single by Chris Lowry.
Nate Shipp led the Pirates offensively going 2-4 with three RBIs.
Wooten added two hits and scored three runs and was busy in right
field, contributing five put-outs.
In the night cap, once again extra innings were required to
determine the outcome. The game began as an evenly matched pitchers
duel and after the scheduled seven innings the Pirates and Tornados
were tied at 1-1.
Extra innings brought a scenario that closely resembled game one.
Concordia took a two run lead in the top of the eighth on a pair of
singles by Justin Yeager and Robert Brown. In the bottom half of
the inning the Pirates responded with their second comeback of the
day. Kyle Belski walked. John Wooten grounded to third, but an
errant throw by third baseman Justin Beasley allowed him to reach
and sent Belski to third. Nick Ashford then doubled to left scoring
Belski. Two batters later after an intentional walk to Nate Shipp
and a strikeout by Nick Mace, Wooten scored on a wild pitch to tie
the game.
However, in the top of the ninth the Tornados broke things open
once and for all scoring four times to take control and sweep the
double header. Once again Beasley was the offensive hero for
Concordia, driving in the game winning runs with a two run double
to left.
The Pirate's starting pitcher, Chris Webber, pitched very
well, giving up just one run in seven innings while not allowing a
walk.
These two teams will wrap up their three game series tomorrow at
12:00 PM.
