Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. - With three second half goals on Friday evening the Pirates defeated Centre College 3-0 to remain in second place in the SCAC with a 9-1 conference record, 12-6 overall. The nine conference wins is the most in the history of the program.
After a scoreless first half that saw the two teams nearly equal in shots Southwestern got down to work after the break. The tandem of Alex Keller and Evan Perkins that has been electric all season sparked a scoring spree. Eight minutes into the second half Perkins received a pass from Keller in the middle of the field and put the ball in the back of the net to give SU their first goal.
Not three minutes later Keller scored himself off a throw-in that careened off Centre's keeper and went into the goal putting the Pirates up 2-0.
In the 62nd minute Keller scored again off a pass from Perkins and with the keeper out of the goal all Keller had to do was tap the ball in giving Southwestern their third goal.
SU was outshot 13-11 and had three fewer corner kicks (4-1) than Centre but the Pirate defensive line held strong to keep the Colonels scoreless. Nick Pierce recorded four saves in the contest for his third shutout of the season.
The Pirates wrap-up regular season play on Sunday at DePauw. The game has major implications for Southwestern as the Tigers are ranked #11 in the nation currently. A win over the Tigers would help the Pirates' cause immensely as they seek an at large bid to the NCAA tournament.
