PENALTY KICK CONTINUES SKID AS PIRATES FALL TO UCSC

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Once again a late game penalty kick was the demise of the Pirates as Southwestern's men's soccer team fell 3-2 to the University of California - Santa Cruz. With the loss SU falls to 9-5 on the year while UCSC improves to 9-2-3.

The Banana Slugs struck first, scoring in the 13th minute when Sorensen found Fondy for an early goal. It didn't take long for the Pirates to even the count, however, as four minutes later Colin McCulloch found Evan Perkins to tie the game at 1-1.

UCSC went up by one heading into the break when Sorensen's corner was headed home by Fondy again, putting the Pirates down 2-1 at halftime.

Just a minute after the second half began Southwestern's Alex Keller got free on a breakaway and brought the score even again 2-2.

A penalty kick once again sealed Southwestern's fate as UCSC was awarded one in the 73rd minute. Fondy completed a hat trick with the game winning goal.

Southwestern trailed in the shot count 19-7 but had one more corner opportunity 3-2. Nick Pierce was busy in goal as he recorded seven saves.

The Pirates return to home conference action on Friday as they face Oglethorpe at 3:00 pm.
