Box Score GEORGETOWN, Texas - Amy Douglas' (pictured) goal in the 75th
minute gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead that lasted throughout the
remainder of the contest as the Pirates defeated Birmingham
Southern College on Friday afternoon 1-0. With the win SU improves
to 6-5-1 on the season and 2-3 in the SCAC while BSC falls to 6-5
and 1-3.
Birmingham Southern poured it on thick in the first half, taking
eight shots to Southwestern's four, but SU's defense was solid as
they kept the Panthers out of goal as the game remained deadlocked
at the break.
As the second half got underway Southwestern turned up the
pressure and put together strong attacks, but their shots were just
off the mark. SU had two corner attempts in the half and held BSC
to zero. Douglas' goal came after a save by keeper Sarah Nonaka who
punted the ball 60 yards to Ashley Gallegos on the left side.
Gallegos settled the ball and placed a perfect pass to Douglas who
was streaking down the center of the field. Once Douglas received
the pass all she had to do was beat BSC's keeper, which she did
with a soft touch shot into the goal.
After the goal the Pirate's defense went back to work, keeping
the Panthers out of the box and off the scoreboard despite a couple
of free kick opportunities.
Southwestern remains at home for their next contest as they face
Millsaps College on Sunday at noon.
