Box Score
The Southwestern baseball team defeated DeSales University by a score of 11-3 on Tuesday (Mar. 4) as the Bulldogs made a stop in Georgetown while they spend their spring break in Texas.
DeSales struck first with a run in the top of the first but the Pirates had an answer in the bottom of the inning. Patrick Keenan (Colleyville, TX/Colleyville Heritage HS) drew a leadoff walk and then was brought home when Blake Williams (Lufkin, TX/Lufkin HS) hit his second home run in as many games. The Bulldogs added one run on one hit in the top of the second and SU was able to end the inning with the bases loaded and the score tied 2-2.
The Bucs took the lead for good in the third as Williams scored Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS) with a single for a 3-2 lead. In the fifth, Keenan scored on a wild pitch, followed by Williams again driving in Falcone. Sophomore John Wooten (Columbus, TX/Columbus HS) then hit his third triple of the season to drive in Williams.
SU added a run in the sixth as Matt Clark (Spring, TX/Klein HS) drew a walk with one out, stole second and then scored on a Falcone single. The Pirates then added four runs in the eighth inning, giving them a comfortable 11-2 lead. DeSales got a single run in the ninth for the final of 11-3.
Falcone was 4-5 at the plate as he drove in three runs and scored three. He hit his fourth double of the year and over the last six games he has raised his batting average from .346 to .500 on the year. During that six game span, he has recorded five multi-hit games.
Williams collected three hits in five at bats, driving in four runs and scoring twice. With the three hits, the sophomore extended his current hitting streak to 10 games. Wooten and Jamie Herrmann (Houston, TX/Westside HS) were the only other Pirates to record base hits. Keenan drew three walks and scored three times.
On the mound, Brantley Freeman (Mansfield, TX/Mansfield HS) threw 7.2 innings in relief to pick up the win. The first-year lefty gave up just one unearned run on three hits while striking out eight batters. He is now 1-0 on the season.
The Pirates improved their season record to 6-7 while DeSales falls to 1-4.
Southwestern travels to Belton, TX on Wednesday (Mar. 5) for a single game with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 2:00 pm.
