First-year Amy Douglas (Missouri City, TX/Hightower HS) recorded a hat trick and scored the game-winning goal as the Southwestern University Pirates rolled to a 5-0 victory over Schreiner University on Sunday (Sept. 30) in Kerrville, TX.
Douglas scored goal number one during the seventh minute with an assist from fellow first-year Sarah Holifield (Sugar Land, TX/Dulles HS). It was Holifield's first-ever collegiate assist. Early during the 19th minute, Casey Grier (Spring, TX/Klein Collins HS) got an assist from A.J. Andreola (Garland, TX/Berkner HS) to bring the score to 2-0.
At the 23:17 mark, Douglas scored her second goal of the game unassisted. Junior Kady Smith (Corpus Christi, TX/King HS) scored her third goal of the year with an assist from Andreola during the 40th minute. Douglas then completed the hat trick during the 48th minute to make the score 5-0. She now has nine goals in eight games.
The SU defense allowed the Mountaineers to put just two out of five shots on goal while the Pirates attempted 29 shots and had 19 on goal. Goalkeeper Eryn Snyder (Spring Branch, TX/Smithson Valley HS) made two saves to earn the win. The Schreiner goalie made 19 saves while allowing five goals.
The Pirates now own a season record of 7-3 which is the best start Southwestern has had under head coach Jack Flatau. The previous best start was during the 2004 season when SU started out 6-3-1. Schreiner is 2-5-1 on the year.
Southwestern jumps in to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule next weekend with a 1-0 record in the conference and the final eight games coming against SCAC competition. Rhodes College visits Georgetown, TX on Friday (Oct. 5) at 2:00 p.m.
