Matthew Carr is in his sixth season as a coach for the Pirates football team and fifth season as the defensive line coach. He previously served as the tight ends coach in his first season. Coach Carr added Football Operations to his role with the Pirates in 2023 assisting in responsibilities with Coach Chip Killian. In 2022, Carr oversaw All-ASC Second Team defensive lineman Maliq McDonald who also earned All-SAA honors in 2023 along with fellow defensive end Jason Lund. 2024 included a breakout First Team All-SAA selection for Maurion Williams-Jack, coached by Carr.
Carr coached tight ends and punters at Taylor High School in Taylor, Texas, in 2018 and 2019, working with an all-state and all-district punter. Before that, Carr was a linebackers coach at Central Methodist University in 2017 and Waldorf University in 2016. He also coached at the USA Cam-Am Bowl in 2013 and 2014.
Carr began his coaching career as a student-assistant at Blinn College from 2010 to 2013. He coached linebackers and the defensive line, where he helped players advance to four-year scholarship institutions. Carr has also worked at several football camps for NCAA Division I programs, including the University of Alabama, Texas A&M University, and Texas State University.
Carr earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Methodist University in 2019. He and his wife, Kelsey, reside in Taylor with their two daughters Nolan and Elliot.
