The Rockwell Family Baseball Field holds a long and storied history. Built in 1978, Rockwell Field has seen many changes to become one of the top NCAA Division III fields in the region. Admissions to all Southwestern baseball games are free during the regular season.

In 2023, new chair-back seating was installed to replace bleacher seating. The press box interior was renovated with the addition of a state-of-the-art PA and sound system. The scoreboard also received upgrades with the addition of a video board. Previous additions included a new press box and lights in 1997, along with a scoreboard and message board. A new batting cage down the left field line was added in 2007, along with bullpen areas down both foul lines.

Rockwell Field has been the host of NCAA Regionals and NAIA District and Area Playoffs as recent as 2003. Numerous high school playoff games are held at Rockwell Field along with several select and scouting tournaments during the summer. Local wood bat summer college leagues also call Rockwell Field home during the months of June and July.

The Field was named in honor of Henry M. Rockwell, a former student-athlete who graduated from Southwestern in 1922.

The baseball program built a new clubhouse in 2013 as an added facility to the Robertson Center. The clubhouse was dedicated in honor of long-time legendary Pirate Head Coach Jim Mallon. Mallon, who amassed a record of 1,197-601 between 1971 and his retirement in 2004 ended his coaching career ranked third all-time in wins for both the NCAA and the NAIA. Over the years, his teams won multiple championships, including a third-place finish at the NAIA World Series in 1984—one of the high points of Mallon's career.

After Southwestern's transition to NCAA Division III, his teams won five SCAC Championships and advanced to seven NCAA Regional Championships. He was named NAIA District Coach of the Year on five occasions and SCAC Coach of the Year four times. From 1994 to 1999 he had players earn NCAA Division III National Statistical Champion honors six times.

Twenty-four of his players earned All-American or Academic All-American honors, and 18 went on to compete in professional baseball with four reaching the major league level. In recognition of his accomplishments, Mallon was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1992, the Southwestern University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010, and the Big Country Hall of Fame (posthumously) in 2013.
