Put together one of the top offensive seasons in program history … received D3baseball.com honorable-mention All-America honors … named ABCA/Rawlings and D3baseball.com first-team All-West Region … became the fifth player in program history to earn SCAC Player of the Year … also received Southwestern’s Dr. Tex Kassen Male Athlete of the Year award … twice named SCAC Hitter of the Week … led the conference with 51 runs scored, 31 stolen bases, and eight triples … started 39 games in center field … hit .391 with 10 doubles, five home runs and 36 RBIs … his 31 stolen bases came in 35 attempts … logged a .983 fielding percentage with five outfield assists … led squad with 21 multiple-hit and eight multi-RBI games … had four three-hit contests … also tied together a 19-game hitting streak (Feb. 21-April 3) … during streak he hit .409 (34-for-83) with four doubles, one triple, two home runs and 17 RBIs … went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and four RBIs at Dallas (March 22) … posted a 3-for-4 performance with a double, a triple and four RBIs against Hardin-Simmons (April 7) … went 3-for-4 with two triples and five RBIs at Schreiner (April 25) … earned CoSIDA Academic All-District and third-team Academic All-America honors.

2014 (Sophomore)
Earned a spot as the Pirates everyday center fielder, starting in 37 games and hitting .239 … posted 19 RBIs, which was second-mostt for the Pirates … was 12-for-15 on the base paths … led Southwestern with two home runs and finished with team-high eight extra-base hits and 47 total bases … first home run of his career came against Mary Hardin-Baylor, while adding a season-high 3 RBIs … also named to the SCAC Academic Honor Roll for the second consecutive season.

2013 (Freshman)
Saw action in five games in his first season at Southwestern … hit .182 and drove in two runs … earned SCAC Academic Honor Roll accolades.

High School
A first-team all-district and third-team All-Houston selection in 2011 … selected as the Most Valuable Player for Cypress Lakes High School in 2010, and earned second-team all-district honors that season … also a two-time academic all-district pick.

Personal
Son of Bill and Linda Cates … has two siblings, Robert and Mary … majoring in biochemistry with a minor in Spanish at Southwestern.
