Pure Dominance By Pirate Volleyball In Defensive Clinic Against Schreiner, 3-0

KERRVILLE, TEXAS - Southwestern University Volleyball traveled two hours south and sent a message in a sweep over Schreiner University on Tuesday night, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-15). Southwestern improves to 9-5 on the year with an 8-3 record in non-conference.

The Pirates came to Kerrville last night on a mission to avenge their loss to the Mountaineer last season in a uncharacteristic performance. The Mountaineers entered play 5-5 overall. Lucy Riggar was a massive story of the night, smashing four early kills to give the Pirates an early 10-7 lead. However, Schreiner kept it close as the Pirates led 17-16 in the first set before they scored last eight of 11 points for the set win.

The next two sets were a defensive clinic, frustrating the Mountaineers with incredible digs and blocks. The impressive note in the 25-20 set two victory was that seven different Pirates registered kills, displaying their depth and resting some key pieces. Southwestern forced six attacking errors with 15 kills of their own as the Mountaineers was under .100 hitting for the set.

Set three was the icing on the cake as Schreiner couldn't find any open windows with a .042 hitting percentage as the Pirate back line was incredible. Lauren McIntyre was everywhere also contributing a big night passing with 19 assists. Madison Ingram and Tatum Ahrens put the Mountaineers away as the Pirates secured a seventh season sweep.

QUOTABLES

HC Don Flora on the win

"Big picture -- "This was a clean and methodical win over a talented team. Riggar and Ahrens carried an important load in the offense tonight. McIntyre and Caroline Srubar kept the offense balanced and made some good choices in finding our middle hitters. Defensively we made some really good reads behind our blocked, evidenced by having 89 digs in three sets. This was an important step in who we want to be on the floor playing Pirate Volleyball."
