SEGUIN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Men's Soccer took down Texas Lutheran University on the road on Friday night, 2-0. The Pirates took an early one goal lead then waited for nearly three hours in a rain delay before completing the game at 1 a.m. The squad has found their stride and improves to 3-1 overall.
Southwestern traveled to Seguin against a Bulldog squad who received national votes before the season, but have struggled early against a gauntlet of schedule facing multiple ranked teams. The Bulldogs lost last weekend against common opponent University of Lynchburg, 2-1.
Cooper Pero scored the opening goal on his specialty via a corner kick from
Ross Anderson as he continues to dominant the air game. Anderson collects his second assist as both were All-SAA selections last season. Before halftime, the game entered a delay over two hours for lightning. However, this game was determined to be played as the stakes were high for both teams as the win could prove to go a long way for the Pirates in the their tournament hopes.
After the delay, Southwestern's work rate never changed.
Quinn MacLeod took on his defender from the left flank and drove 40 yards and fired a rocket top bins from an impossible angle. The goal was scored in the 53rd minutes, which gave the Pirates the necessary insurance to pull off the victory.
GAME NOTES
- Pero scored his second goal of the season and 12th on his career.
- The Pirates are generally known for the defense with uncharacteristic goals allowed in a few matches to start the season.
- However, the squad held tough last night with the shutout as they are still only surrendering one goal per game.
- Chase Johnson, Amar Singh, Anderson, and Pero held the defense together playing all 90 minutes.
