Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

MLAX Squanders Second Half Opportunities Against UMass Boston, 9-7

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Men's Lacrosse played sound defensively the entire game, but missed the mark on numerous second half scoring opportunities in a losing effort to UMass Boston, 9-7. The Pirates still look for their first home win, falling to 4-5 overall.

Both squads were hungry for wins as the Pirates started the season hot at 4-1, but ran into some tough competition losing now four straight. Senior Matthew Houtz scored the first Pirate goal, following his seven-goal performance on Tuesday. Junior Josh Swandal helped equalize with an acrobatic first quarter goal. The game continues to go back and fourth as freshman Dylan Knighten scored on an assist from sophomore Keaten Cox

Cox got back in scoring sheet with an unassisted snipe as he went goalless for only the second time yesterday. Freshman Marshall Mohun and Knighten scored to helped take a 6-5 lead. Knighten has posted three multi-goal performances this year as a freshman. Sophomore Jeffrey Jordan scored to take the Pirates into halftime up 7-6 as it seemed to be an offensive slug fest.

However, both goalies were incredible in the second half as only three more goals were scored. The Beacons scored once in the third and twice in the fourth to escape with the victory. Southwestern had 25 shots in the second with nine on goal. The Pirates hit the post/crossbar five times, but the story was the performance of the Beacons goalie who racked up 19 saves.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sophomore Dante Avicolli had 14 saves and only nine goals allowed with four straight double-digit save performances.
  • Sophomore Jake Trailer frustrated the Beacons all night with four caused turnovers.
  • Junior Trey Pena had another strong night at faceoffs, going 11-17 with seven ground balls.
  • Most every statistical battle tonight was even aside from the Pirates ability to win 12-18 faceoffs.
  • The Pirates goal differential this season is +2, playing in close games nearly every night.
