Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MBB Sweeps Pivotal SAA Road Trip With OT Win At Oglethorpe, 90-81

ATLANTA, GEORGIA - Southwestern University Men's Basketball treated Sunday like an one-game elimination playoff in route to beating Oglethope University on Sunday afternoon in overtime, 90-81. The Pirates improve to 12-12 overall and 6-7 in conference after sweeping the weekend trip.

Every gym is difficult to escape with a road win in this conference. Southwestern faced multiple second half deficits before the Pirates won the clutch moments in the final minute to force overtime. The Pirates dominated overtime to fly home with two wins in Georgia. Senior Shobby Enakpene and sophomore Aedan Lewis combined for 52 points on the night.

With only two games remaining, Southwestern were forced to absorb the mindset of win or go home. The Pirates willed their way past Berry College and Oglethorpe to move into a tie for third place. Despite the movement, Southwestern did not clinch their spot in the six-team SAA tournament quite yet. The league could potentially have a scenario where five teams finish 6-8, which would trigger the best home wins as the tie breaker.

However, Southwestern put themselves in a very strong position to make the tournament with one regular season game left. Moreover, if Millsaps College loses to Berry on Thursday, Southwestern automatically clinches.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Southwestern started senior Luke Hatcher, junior Zach Gomez, junior Luke Mills, freshman Neo Franco, and Enakpene.
  • The Pirates poured in three triples to take a 15-10 lead at the first media timeout, setting the tone on the road.
  • Lewis came into the game and threw down an alley-oop dunk as even the away crowd was in awe.
  • Southwestern was dominating up 30-20 before the Petrels made a 16-6 run to tie the game at half.
  • Oglethorpe buried back-to-back triples to start the half, building a 44-38 lead.
  • Franco knotted up the game at 48 with a big three, before Mills cleaned up in the paint to take the lead.
  • However, Oglethorpe regained a 70-68 lead with five minutes remaining.
  • Lewis and Enakpene led down the stretch, forcing overtime as the defense was excellant.
  • Hatcher set the tone in overtime with a pivotal three for the second game in a row.
  • Enakpene, Lewis, and Franco iced the game to escape with another wire to wire win.
