MLAX Scores With Two Seconds Remaining To Beat Dubuque, 11-10

DUBUQUE, IOWA - Southwestern Men's Lacrosse earns a massive opening road victory at the University of Dubuque on Friday night in the final seconds, 11-10. 

The Pirates allowed the Trojans back into the game as Dubuque scored three unanswered goals to tie the game as the Pirates called timeout with 15 seconds remaining. Sophomore Keaten Cox wrapped around the goal and fired the game-winner with two seconds to spare.  

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

1Q | SWU 3, UD 2

  • Cox got the Pirates started converting the first goal of the 2026 season. 
  • However, Dubuque rallied back with two straight goals before junior Josh Swandal rifled one to equalize at 2-2. 
  • Senior Jackson Strauser found the back of the net on a brilliant pass from freshman Dylan Knighten
  • Junior Trey Pena went 6-6 on faceoffs in the first quarter. 

2Q | SWU 5, UD 3

  • Freshman Abram Gareis found Strauser for his second goal of the night as Gareis collected his first collegiate assist, leading 4-2. 
  • The following faceoff was won by Pena. Sophomore Jake Trailer collected the ground ball and fired a goal from the restraining line. 
3Q | SWU 8, DU 7
  • The Trojans came out of the half firing, tying the game at 5-5. 
  • Strauser silenced the Trojans momentum, securing a hat trick converting in the crease. 
  • Senior Matthew Swandal fired a shot from low to high, building a 7-5 lead. 
  • Southwestern took advantage of a Dubuque penalty as freshman Marshall Mohun dropped a dime to Strauser for his fourth goal of the season. 
  • Once again, Dubuque clawed back within one at the end of the quarter, 8-7. 
4Q | SWU 11, UD 10
  • Sophomore Nolan Zaby found Swandal who patiently beat the goalie for a pivotal insurance goal, 9-7. 
  • Freshman Austin Egler scored a sidearm goal as the Pirate bench erupted for Egler's career first. 
  • The Trojans refused to quit, tying the game at 10-10 with two minutes to play. 
  • Sophomore Dante Avicolli made two pivotal saves in crunch time. 
  • The Pirates called timeout with 15 seconds remaining. Cox scored the wrap around goal with only two seconds left to win it. 

GAME NOTES

  • Multiple Pirates stepped up with senior standout Matthew Houtz out tonight. 
  • Faceoff decisions were the large disparity as Pena went 13 for 22, while freshman Dylan Mackie added a 2 for 3 night. 
  • The Swandal brothers combined for three goals tonight.
  • Strauser started 2026 strong with four goals, leading all scorers. The senior posted 75 goals in the past two seasons. 
  • Junior Zach Faubion totaled a strong night with two caused turnovers four ground balls.
