The Pirates entered Friday need looking for points at home as they played two of the toughest SAA opponents to start the year with losses against Trinity University and Centre College. Friday night was about as windy as it gets at Varsity Field as the team attacking the south goal had the big advantage for their respective halves. However, both goals were scored by the team attacking against the wind.

Southwestern found opportunities to start the game with seven shots in the first 20 minutes as Maddie Holland had two. However, Oglethorpe struck first with a goal in the 21st minute as EJ Searfoss made the initial save, but the deflection fell straight the Petrels goal scorer. Kristine Garcia went near post in the 30th minute, hitting the woodwork. Southwestern went into half down a goal, facing a steep incline against a heavy wind in the second half.

The Pirate coaching staff made multiple changes, starting numerous freshman along with putting senior captain Erin York in goal. York made six pivotal saves in the second half, denying the Petrels on a close effort putting her body on the line for the defensive highlight of the night. In the 76th minute, Montse Hernandez-Soto dished to Powell in a highly congested area in the box. Powell made a quick turn and found a sliver of space to fire a goal from 15 yards out.

Powell's goal preserved the tie in a big moment for the Pirates SAA Tournament hopes. The second half changes defensively were pivotal keeping the Petrels scoreless for the remainder of the game.
