MBB Falls One Shot Short On Senior Night Against TLU, 75-73

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Men's Basketball fought back with a chance to win the game on the final possession, but drop the senior night matchup against Texas Lutheran University, 75-73. The Robertson Center was on fire with 549 fans in attendance. 

Southwestern celebrated senior night early for our six Pirates including Nico Murr, Shobby Enakpene, Luke Hatcher, Patrick Hoffman, Sebastian Loder, and Ben Greengold. Murr, Enakpene, Hatcher, Hoffman, and Loder started on the floor together as well for the Pirates. 

The second half was a seesaw of runs, but the Pirates found themselves back within two points with six seconds to play after being down as many as 11 points in the half. Southwestern missed the a three point attempt for the game-winner at the buzzer to fall to 4-4 overall on the season. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Pirates six seniors and their families were recognized for the hard work and dedication put into this game. 
  • Southwestern jumped into the game shortly after, looking for revenge against a Texas Lutheran squad who beat the Pirates 84-77 a few weeks ago. 
  • Freshman Neo Franco had a breakout game with 19 points, scoring eight early and building a 13-11 lead for a Pirates squad battling through tired legs after playing Wednesday on the road. 
  • The Bulldogs mounted a run, taking a 32-23 lead with three minutes to play. 
  • Franco scored five straight points, but TLU took a 36-28 lead into halftime. 
  • The Pirates were 9-29 from the field, 5-12 from three, and 5-10 from the line. 
  • Hatcher helped the Pirates pull within three after two straight buckets in the paint. 
  • Enakpene had a slower night than usual also battling a nagging injury. However, the team captain scored six straight points, cutting the deficit to 53-51. 
  • Junior Zach Gomez knocked down a tough three before the Bulldogs mounted a run to take a 70-61 lead with under two minutes. 
  • With seven seconds left, Gomez buried another three making it 74-73 Bulldogs. 
  • TLU went one for two on free throws giving the Pirates six seconds to tie or win the game. 
  • Gomez took the ball the length of the court and heaved a clean look from 30 feet that just missed. 
  • The Pirates clear mistakes tonight were at the charity strike, finishing 8 for 20. 
  • Southwestern created extra chances with 43 rebounds, opposed to 35 from TLU. However, SU left too many points on the board from the free throw line. 
GAME NOTES
  • Franco is stepping into a bigger role recently and excelling with 19 points to lead the squad. 
  • Gomez had 17 on the night for a Pirate career-high. The transfer is now averaging 10.5 PPG.

The Pirates take some needed time away from games to rest the legs before hosting McMurry University on December 15 at 5:30 p.m.
