MBB Falters Late In Tight Loss To Dallas Christian, 87-80

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Men's Basketball traded blows with Dallas Christian College all afternoon in the home opener, eventually falling short to the Crusaders, 87-80. The Pirate lead by four at halftime but could not close the game as the Crusaders finished on a 19-8 run. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Pirates Basketball program started a new era under head coach Matt Streich
  • Southwestern started three returners and two transfers in junior Zach Gomez, junior Zach Shugars, senior Shobby Enakpene, senior Luke Hatcher, and junior Luke Mills.
  • The Pirates connected on seven threes in the first half, leading by four at the break after an even battle. 
  • Southwestern came out of the half strong leading by seven as Hatcher and Enakpene were aggressive on the offensive end. 
  • The lead expanded to 51-40 after Hatcher and Enakpene hit back-to-back triples. 
  • Dallas Christian mounted a pivotal 9-0 run, which was the turning point for the Crusaders making big shots. 
  • However, transfer guard Gomez knocked down a three to expand the lead to five with ten minutes to play. 
  • The Crusaders mounted another big 9-1 run in the final two minutes, which sealed the deal making dagger three pointers. 
GAME NOTES
  • Enakpene was the leading scorer with 21, while Hatcher was right behind him with 19. 
  • Gomez had 15 on five threes in his first game as a pirate transferring from juco Dallas College Brookhaven. 
  • Freshman Sawyer Batz impressed in his debut with nine points adding a shooter off the Pirate bench. 
  • Shugars finished with nine board on the day leading the team. 
UP NEXT
Southwestern heads to University of the Ozarks next Friday for a battle in Clarksville, Arkansas at 7:30 p.m.
